Besides excelling in economics with expertise in poverty eradication and rural development, he had a major role and impact on government socioeconomic policies as well as being a pivotal institution builder. Malaysia and its multiethnic population, in particular the indigenous Malays, owed a debt of gratitude to his pioneering ideas, endeavors, and influence in redrawing the socioeconomic landscape of the country in the span of two generations.
