By Eva Blandis. By Jordanna Schriever. Topic: Domestic Violence. Former senator Natasha Stott Despoja is chairing the royal commission. The hearings begin a year after four women were killed in separate incidents, each allegedly by a man known to them, in what peak body Embolden described as "the worst week for fatal domestic and family violence within any jurisdiction in Australian history".
The SA government has said it expects the inquiry to last 12 months. A Royal Commission into South Australia's domestic violence "epidemic" has heard the state's crisis service centre only has capacity to answer 70 per cent of calls they receive from victims of domestic violence. The four women whose deaths prompted the call were Jodie Jewell, who was shot and killed at her home , year-old mother-of-five Victoria Ann Stewart , a year-old woman whose body was found in a house at Felixstow and a year-old woman whose body was found at Davenport, near Port Augusta.
Ms Jewell, 55, was found dead in a Modbury North home on November 21 last year. Supplied: SA Police. The first witness, chief executive officer of Women's Safety Services South Australia Maria Hagias, highlighted the need for better funding to combat the crisis and provide adequate services for victims.

Ms Haigas said the state's crisis call centre, expected to record an annual total of 35, calls by the end of December, was unable to keep up with growing demand. After four women were killed in a week in SA a year ago, thousands of people took to the streets to call for change. Ms Hagias said this also puts "significant stress" on frontline staff.
A friend of Jodie Jewell holds a picture of her at an anti-domestic violence rally. The commission has been asked to inquire into four key areas — prevention, early intervention, the state's response, and recovery and healing — to determine what needs to change to stop domestic, family and sexual violence.
